Protecting Your Business From Summer Storms

Severe storms frequently rock areas across the country during the summer months, as the combination of moisture and rising warm air in the atmosphere creates the perfect conditions for a storm to brew. As hail pummels the roof and wind whips outside of the building that houses your business, you may be anxious about damage that could potentially be inflicted upon your business in the event of a severe storm. That anxiety is completely warranted, as hail and vicious winds can cause structural damage such as damaged roofs and shattered windows. This kind of damage can lead to rather costly repairs, so preventing such damage is of utmost importance.
Firstly, make sure that your company has business insurance, since it can cover the cost to repair any damage directly caused by the storm. In addition, it would also be wise to take your own precautions by inspecting your roof regularly and cleaning out any debris that may clog gutters, therefore preventing sufficient drainage. Consider installing impact-resistant glass for windows in order to decrease the chances of windows shattering, projecting glass across the floor of your business and damaging any items in its path. In the event that windows do shatter, store valuable equipment in areas that are high off the ground and away from windows so that they cannot be damaged by flying glass. For outdoor equipment, make sure that it is secured before a storm hits.
In general, it is safe practice to monitor weather forecasts, especially if your business is located in an area that is subject to severe storms. Taking extra precautionary steps and having an emergency plan in place when storms hit will alleviate some of the stress surrounding the cleanup process and simultaneously keep your business as safe as possible.
